Condoms urged for Tunisian migrants on Italian island

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 09:54 PM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) To prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, condoms should be given to the thousands of Tunisian migrants who have set up camp on Italy's southern island of Lampedusa, a top medical officer said Wednesday. 'Just as cigarettes can be distributed, we can hand out condoms and other forms of contraception,' said Nicola Surico, the head of Italy's association of gynaecologists and obstetricians. 'This would cut the risk of STDs such as syphillis and the - papillomavirus, as well as unwanted pregnancies,' she said. There are, at present, more than 6,000 Tunisian immigrants on Lampedusa, who had fled the country when anti-government protests erupted earlier this year. There could could be dozens of unwanted pregnancies among female migrants. 'Unfortunately, in many cases, these women are likely to seek abortions,' another official said. The influx has caused severe overcrowding and has angered residents on the tiny fishing island whose population is around 5,300. Six navy and passenger ships were expected to transfer many of the migrants to other centres elsewhere in Italy as food was running out and sanitary conditions described by officials as 'desperate'. Lampedusa lies around 113 km from Tunisia and 205 km south of Sicily. --IANS/AKI pm/vm

Frozen ovary tissue put back into infertile woman

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 03:34 PM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) A woman, who become infertile after chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, has had frozen ovary tissue inserted back into her by a robot in a pioneering operation, raising hopes for infertile women. Emma Leach, 39, went through the menopause after undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. She had pieces of her ovaries frozen five years ago following her diagnosis and they have now been put back into her body. Leach, from London, went under the knife in the US, the Daily Mail reports. Kutluk Oktay, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology and fertility pioneer at the New York Medical College, agreed to carry out the operation. Her ovary was cut open by the robot and the tissue which had been removed and frozen before her chemotherapy treatment was stitched inside. More pieces of tissue which were too small to stitch in were then injected into the other ovary by the pioneering equipment. She was discharged within hours of the procedure. Oktay, who performed the procedure for the first time, said: 'The robotic arms mimics the movement of the hand but there is much more precision. 'There is no hand tremor - this allows the surgeon to do fine suturing at microscopic levels without having to put patients through invasive surgery,' added Oktay. The robot, named Da Vinci, has previously been used for carrying out heart operations and treating cancer. The news will give new hope to thousands of women around the world who are left infertile after going through chemotherapy.
