( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) An Indian American doctor couple from New Jersey were killed when their single-engine plane crashed into an Ohio cornfield and burst into flames shortly after takeoff Sunday. Viswanathan Rajaraman, the 54-year-old pilot, and Mary J. Sundaram, his 50-year-old wife and the only passenger, were attempting to take off from Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus when the incident happened just before 9 a.m., n.j.com reported citing Ohio State Highway Patrol. Rajaraman, a leading New Jersey neurosurgeon, and his wife were returning to Essex County Airport in Fairfield, which they flew out of on Friday afternoon, according to the aviation website Flight Aware. It was not clear why they were in Ohio for the weekend. The cause of Sunday's plane crash is still under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration sent investigators to the scene, but the National Transportation Safety Board will be heading up the probe, nj.com said citing said Tony Molinaro, an FAA spokesman. Rajaraman, one of the top doctors in New Jersey, specialising in brain and spine cancer, was co-chief of neuro-oncology at Hackensack University Medical Centre's cancer centre. Sundaram was reportedly also a physician, but stopped practicing to raise the couple's daughter, Kaavya Viswanathan, now 24. Originally from Chennai, the family moved around the world. They spent some time in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States in the mid-1990s. Kaavya Viswanathan made news in 2006 as a Harvard undergraduate when she published the novel 'How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life,' a story she wrote in high school. The book made the New York Times bestsellers list. But she was accused of plagiarism shortly after publication and copies of her book were pulled from stores and destroyed by her publisher.

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) Patna, June 19 - Seven more children have died of a mysterious disease in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district taking the death toll to 20, officials said Sunday. The children reported high fever, followed by bouts of unconsciousness and convulsions, leading to their death. Local people termed the mysterious disease as 'chamki ki bimari' and claimed that the symptoms are similar to encephalitis, a disease that causes inflammation of the brain. Health officials however, are still unable to identify the disease. 'In the last twenty four hours, seven more children died due to a mysterious disease at two hospitals in Muzaffarpur. Till now twenty children have died of the disease and over 50 children have been admitted to different hospitals in the last six days,' a district health official said. Bihar Health Minister Ashwani Kumar Chaubey Sunday said that government was serious to take care of children suffering from the unknown disease. The district administration has sounded a high alert to check the spread of the disease. Muzaffarpur Malaria Officer Dr Bhagirathi Prasad told IANS on phone, 'It is unfortunate that the cause of the deaths could not be ascertained till date.' Prasad said a three member team of experts from Patna visited hospitals in Muzaffarpur Saturday to collect blood samples for test but it was a blunder. 'The team visited Muzaffarpur without courier agent to keep collected blood samples. It is nothing but a blunder,' he said. A.P.Singh, the district civil surgeon earlier said, 'We cannot say what disease led to the death of the children here. The disease is yet to be identified. Whether it is encephalitis or some unknown disease, we can say only after medical reports come.' Official sources in the state health department here said there was no facility to identify encephalitis in Bihar. The principal secretary of health department Amarjeet Sinha Friday visited Muzaffarpur to take stock of the situation.

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) Mumbai, June 19 - It's called the modern day medical marvel. HIPEC, a first of its kind machine in India, has proved a life-saver for two Stage IV cancer patients and holds the promise to be a boon for other such cancer patients when the traditional intravenous chemotherapy treatment fails. The Hyperthermic Intra-Peritonial Chemotherapy - machine has been installed at Mumbai's L.H. Hiranandani Hospital. With Tata Cancer Hospital, one of the biggest cancer hospitals in the country, already overburdened with cancer surgeries, the HIPEC procedure can provide relief to several patients who otherwise would have to wait for many months for their turn. Priced at Rs.6 million - HIPEC is manufactured by a French company. The procedure uses a high concentration of chemotherapy. The machine has already proved to be a life-saver for two patients who have been successfully operated upon using a combination of cytoreductive surgery -- which involves reducing number of cancer cells -- and HIPEC. 'The right combination of these two aspects of the treatment are critical for the success of the strategy,' Sanket Mehta, the medico who conducted both the surgeries, told IANS. According to Mehta, there are only 35 centres around the world that undertake the HIPEC treatment, a majority of them being in Europe and the US. Mehta, who has specially been trained in France for cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, said it is also vital to have an excellent anaesthesia team and trained intensive care unit for a successful outcome. 'Hence, it cannot be done everywhere and needs a complete team effort,' he said, adding that the treatment starts from Rs.5 lakh. Sadashiv Patidar, 65, a farmer from Madhya Pradesh, was the first patient to have successfully undergone the surgery. He was suffering from Pseudomyxoma Peritoneii -- a stage IV complicated case of cancer of appendix. During the surgery, all the visible tumours within the abdominal cavity were removed....
