( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) New Delhi, July 23 - More than one lakh Anganwadis, government-run child care centres that are an important tool in implementation of the Integrated Child Development Services -, are not functional. This was revealed here Saturday by Woman and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath. In a statement Saturday, on the conclusion of a conference to review the ICDS programme, Tirath said: 'The priority area is to ensure operationalisation of all the 13.67 lakh sanctioned Anganwadi Centres - as there is still a backlog of around 1.02 to 1.33 lakh AWCs.' On the issue of malnutrition, Tirath said the high level of malnutrition in the country was a matter of 'serious concern'. 'Early detection and prevention - is critical. The states were asked to take specific steps for conducting independent surveys to detect levels of malnutrition and devise nutrition guidelines at community level for treatment of severely malnourished children,' she said. Chemists in four states to down shutters Aug 1

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 08:20 PM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) New Delhi, July 23 - The government's proposal to introduce stricter norms for sale of antibiotics has not gone down well with chemists across the country, who plan to stage a protest here and down shutters in four states Aug 1, drug sellers said Saturday. 'Chemists from 32 states are coming to Delhi on Aug 1 and a protest will be staged at Jantar Mantar while over 91,000 shops in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Orissa will remain closed on the day,' All India Chemist Association president Kailash Gupta told IANS. The association has over six lakh members, he said. The chemists are opposed to a proposal which requires them and doctors to retain prescriptions so that the abuse of antibiotics could be checked. 'If the medicines are restricted from sale, black-marketing will increase and it will give rise to corruption,' said Gupta. 'Ultimately the patients will suffer, as medicines will not be available,' he said. The government claims the steps are needed to check the overuse of antibiotics, leading to development of multi-drug resistant bacteria. 'At present, only advanced antibiotics have been included -. This system - is prevalent in many countries. The step is necessary, as overuse of antibiotics has led to several problems like development of multi-drug resistant bacteria. This will be a long term problem,' said a union health ministry official, who did not wish to be named. 'New policies need more effort, we have to take this step and expect cooperation,' he added. The chemists said if their demand for scrapping this proposal was not met, they would intensify their protest. 'This is the first stage of the protest that we are closing shops in four states. If our demands are not met, we will extend it to all states,' Gupta added.

NSF awards $3 million to triangle scientists to improve federal data

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) DURHAM, N.C. -- A team of statisticians, economists and political scientists from Duke University and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences has received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Census Bureau to improve how federal statistical agencies share government data with the public. U.S. Census Bureau data is protected under confidentiality laws and cannot be released without being modified to maintain individuals' and businesses' privacy. The Triangle Census Research Network will develop statistical methods for making more of the bureau's data available to researchers, policy makers and the public, while preserving anonymity. The team will also use new statistical methods to improve the quality of the data and link it to related sources of information. The grant for the Triangle Census Research Network begins October 1, 2011 and continues until 2016. Jerry Reiter, an associate professor of statistics at Duke University, said that the Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies want to make their data available to the public because the information can lead to a deeper understanding of economic and social issues and more-informed policy-making. Reiter, who led the effort to obtain the NSF funding for the new network, recently worked with researchers from the Census Bureau to develop statistical methods to create a synthetic data set for the Longitudinal Business Database, an annual economic census of establishments in the United States comprising more than 20 million records dating back to 1976. The synthetic data mimics the trends and information contained in the original information, but protects the privacy of the businesses covered in the data set, Reiter said. It is the first time a U.S. federal agency has released a public-use, establishment-level dataset on businesses. With support from the NSF, the developing Triangle Census Research Network can now help the...
