One mosquito coil equals 100 cigarettes

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 08:01 PM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) Smoke emitted from one mosquito repellent coil is equivalent to those of 100 cigarettes, thus causing harm to a large number of people in India, an expert said Wednesday. 'Not many people know about it, but the damage done to your lungs by one mosquito coil is equivalent to the damage done by 100 cigarettes. This was according to a recent study conducted in Malyasia,' said Chest Research Foundation director Sandeep Salvi. He was speaking at the conference 'Air Pollution and Our Health', organised by the Centre for Science and Environment - along with the Indian Council for Medical Research and the Indian Medical Association. Salvi said there is a lack of awareness about the impact of air pollution on human health. Pointing out the 'lack of research culture' among Indian doctors, Salvi said that indoor air pollution too is a health risk factor. Participants at the event, which included doctors and health researchers, also spoke about vehicular air pollution in the capital. According to estimates, about 55 percent of Delhi's population lives within 500 metres from main roads - and is, therefore, prone to a variety of physical disorders. 'The vehicular pollution is a major concern for the environment. The rising incidents of genetic disorder has a lot to do with air pollution. India loses one million children under five because of respiratory problems every year,' said Sanjeev Bagai, the chief executive officer of Batra Hospitals. He said industries also contribute to the air pollution and these need to be shifted out of the capital.

Woman's changing facial features helped diagnose tumour

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 10:46 AM PDT

( From http://www.rxpgnews.com ) New Delhi, Sep 1 - A look in the mirror started giving nightmares to Renu Sharma. Her lips were growing bigger, facial features were getting distorted, eyes were bulging out -- she'd begun to dread her own reflection. After a visit to a cosmetologist and a physician, she was diagnosed with brain tumour. 'It was in June that I started noticing changes in my facial features. Thinking this was because of heat, the first thought that came to my mind was consulting a cosmetologist,' Sharma, a homemaker, told IANS. 'But then I was advised to go to a physician. An MRI was done,' Sharma, 33, said. In a report that shocked her, it was revealed that Sharma had benign tumour in the pituitary gland of the brain. 'The tumour is known as Pituitary Adenoma. Excessive production of the growth hormone in the pituitary gland leads to changes in physical features,' Sudhir Tyagi, senior consultant of neurosurgery, told IANS. The pituitary gland is responsible for the production and release of hormones such as growth hormone. It was not just changing physical features that hinted at Sharma's deteriorating health condition, she also complained of piercing headache and weakness in limbs. Experts term the condition as Acromegaly. The metabolic disorder, which causes enlargement of body tissues, has a rare occurrence of six per 100,000 adults. The mother of two was recently operated at Apollo hospital and is now back at her Noida residence. 'We rarely see tumour cases resulting in changes in the facial and physical features of the patient. The patient was immediately taken for a minimal invasive skull-based surgery where we made incision through the nose to remove the tumour,' Tyagi explained. The surgery costs around Rs.200,000 in India. 'The difficult part is that we have not been able to ascertain the cause of the tumour. The patient slowly regains old features if diagnosed on time,' the doctor said. In cases where the diagnosis is done late,...
